So, you’ve come to this site because you’re looking for really (really) cheap wine: a bottle of filthy cheap red to clutch to as you stumble along the Seine bitching about how you just spent your hostel money on a sandwich (not to mention wondering, by this point, about where your hostel is); or an ice-cold, cheap German white to drink off your beer hangover from the night before in some sunny park in Berlin before realizing that the only thing missing, on this particular morning, is beer. Whatever you might need really cheap French, German, Italian, and Spanish wine for, this is the site that hopes to provide actual information on how it will make your evening or, if you feel like testing your luck, leave you crouched over a gutter.

There is, however, a slight difference to this site. It’s not so much about the blackcurrant nose to a tannic wine with lilac undertones, because I’ve yet to meet anyone who actually finds that appetizing. The descriptions in these pages will have more to do with how the wine felt to drink and how damn tasty it was. And the wines are headed by the largest word you see on the label, because that, presumably, is how you’ll find them.

With that, remember, I’m not perfect. There’s been a nasty tendency for the third cheap bottle of the night to receive a better review than the first–and the fourth to receive such a vague but surprisingly positive review that you might think I couldn’t remember anything about it. Did we save the best for last? I don’t know. But take a pinch of salt with every review, then drink the wine you feel like drinking. After all, it’s only two Euros on the line, and there’ll be another supermarket down the street.

If you like cheap wine (i.e. can’t afford anything else) and live in the U.S.A. check this site out. Cheap Wine Ratings leans more toward the traditional (comprehensive rating system, wine parlance, and histories of varietals, etc.), but we forgive it because being ignorant doesn’t mean we can’t be nice.

Fair warning, though: Cheap Wine Ratings is not devoted to “Really” cheap wine. It values quality as well as price mark and quantity. As I said: Fair warning.
