Casal Garcia Vinho Verde
Because of the risks involved in trying to get through hundreds of bottles of really cheap wine, most of these wines get only one shot at fame/glory/the liver before a review is hastily scribbled down and the next bottle opened—all in the quest to find the wine that does not beg to be removed from memory, the wine that might bear a repeat performance. This wine, see:
It’s like friendship—not the letter unanswered or the birthday forgotten, but the breakfast date that she makes bang on time even though it’s the middle of a blizzard and you’re the only two people in the café and it’s the first time she’s got up before 9:00 A.M. in three years but she’s there god damn it where’s the fucking coffee at.
It’s like a music festival—before the portaloos loose their charm but just after the set that made the entire trip worth it joint at the end of the circle of friends beer in the cooler for the morning. And it’s only day 1.
It’s like a relationship—not the one with the gas bill and the dishes trash taken out another meal out of the microwave, but the one with the cabin on the lake soft glow of the comfortable silence book warm next to the fire, sex afterward if the red hasn’t already put you both to sleep.
It is, in short, a really nice bottle of wine: slightly sparkling and pretty dry with suggestions of The Citrus (how’s that for wine speak….); the wine I will drink again and again, just to put off the next wine I’m supposed to review; the first wine to get 4.5 stars because nothing’s allowed to be perfect but it’s just way better than anything else we’ve had. A great, damn cheap wine.
Odysseus returns, Jesus ascends, Martin Luther King wraps up the end of “I Have a Dream” and it’s a sunny day on the Washington Mall.
Amen.
